This Awful Evening

It was a night/one evening/that terrible time that started out so promising/hopeful/well-intentioned. We were excited/eager/looking forward to a good time/an unforgettable experience/something memorable, but it quickly went downhill/took a turn for the worse/turned into a disaster.
